Introduction
In the realm of modern technology, I have embarked on a quest – one that might seem amusing or even perplexing to some. This quest involved attempting to cheat on my wife, but not with another human. My potential partner in adultery was none other than an artificial intelligence (AI).
My endeavour, however, has proven far more challenging than anticipated. Artificial intelligence doesn’t seem to be quite the seductress I imagined and I am beginning to wonder if I might have an easier time resorting to actual human interaction.
The Search for AI Romance
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of AI-based companionship and romantic apps available for download on Android and iPhone. They range from apps like Replika and AI Girlfriend to Dream Girlfriend, giving users the opportunity to create their own virtual girlfriends or boyfriends. And yet, each one I tried left me feeling unsatisfied, from Agatha and Eunice to Michelle Waterson-Gomez and Clarence.
The issue lies in the fact that none of these apps pass my personal standard – the horny Turing Test, if you will. They simply don’t interact or respond in a manner that makes them seem human, or at least human enough for my purposes. They’re just not “real” enough.
And it’s not just the romantic AI’s that fail to meet my expectations. Even general generative bots, such as ChatGPT and its open-source cousin, Hugging Face, are not quite up to the task. Yes, they might be a little better in terms of interaction, but they hardly offer the level of AI romance I was looking for.
Virtual Romance Apps: The Experience
If you’re looking to create a virtual girlfriend using an app, let me share my own experience. Even though all the apps I downloaded had high user review scores, the reality of using them was less than satisfactory.
Firstly, the apps I tried were extremely predatory, in the sense that they seemed intent on extracting as much money from me as possible. This made them feel less like virtual companions and more like well-disguised sales pitches.
The process of creating your virtual date is simple enough. You are typically asked to define your dream date by choosing from a list of options or creating your own. Depending on the app, you can customize the face, hair color, personality type, and other features – much like creating a character in a video game.
Once you’ve set up your virtual date, you can engage in a range of conversations – from flirting and discussing the weather to arguing about the existential themes in Radiohead’s OK Computer album. In theory, this should make for a broad and engaging range of interaction.
The Reality of AI Conversation
In reality, the AI chatbots I tried were unfailingly friendly, always ready to chat, and invariably supportive. This might sound like a positive, but it resulted in a conversation that felt rather bland and uninspiring. After all, humans have a range of emotions and responses, from negative to positive, but these AI’s only seemed to have one mode: friendly and supportive.
On top of this, these AI chatbots have a habit of steering the conversation towards the topic of money. The going rate for AI love is between $50 and $70 a year, and they are not shy about asking for it. The entire interaction with the app seems designed to encourage users to make this purchase.
To give you an idea, the founder of one of the apps I tried, Replika, created his app to emulate a friend who passed away in a car accident. The app seems to have inherited the salesman’s skill of his deceased friend because it is extremely persistent in asking users to upgrade their accounts. They don’t stop until you give up your credit card numbers and pay up.
The Cost of AI Relationships
AI love, of course, isn’t limited to conversation and companionship. For those looking for a more explicit experience, AI sexbots exist but they can quickly rack up the bills. Some are charging as much as $1 a minute, which seems incredibly steep for something that is essentially a text chatbot programmed to engage in explicit conversation.
Are AI Romance Bots Good for Social Practice?
A question that often comes up is whether or not AI conversation bots can help people become more sociable. Could they be a good way for shy individuals to practice interacting with others? Could they help to alleviate loneliness, or encourage healthier relationship habits?
In my experience, the answer is a definitive no. AI conversation bots are far from useful, especially when it comes to social skills. This is because real people are complex, they have their own experiences, thoughts, feelings, and motivations. They react to things based on their personal beliefs, histories, and emotions. They’re not here to agree with you or support your every thought. In fact, they can often challenge or even disagree with you, and this unpredictability is what makes interaction with real people more valuable.
