Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei has reopened the Design Museum in London with an exhibit called “Making Sense” which showcases a variety of provocative and eclectic pieces, both created and collected by the artist himself. Pieces on display include Water Lilies #1, a highlighted work that combines a recreation of Claude Monet’s impressionist work with 650,000 Lego blocks across 22 colours, and Ai’s Study of Perspective, a series of photographs that show Ai brandishing the middle finger to significant sites around the world such as Tiananmen Square in Beijing, the Sagrada Familia, and the White House. Ai’s exhibition also includes everyday objects, such as takeout boxes, a glass helmet and toilet-paper rolls, rendered precious with valuable materials such as glass, jade and porcelain.
